Malecon Temporary Repair

ViequesLove partnered with Navarro Construction and the municipal government to make temporary repairs to the Malecón in Esperanza. Balustrades were replaced, and the entire length of the walkway was painted by community volunteers organized by ViequesLove. The Malecon damage due to the storm is extensive and requires more comprehensive repairs.

Esperanza Fishermen’s Pier

Through the efforts of a partnership including Vieques Air Link, Chelao, The Bernice Shanklin Foundation, and Navarro Construction, the fishermen’s pier in Esperanza was repaired. This pier allows fishermen vehicular access to the pier to launch and recover their boats.

Esperanza Sugarcane Pier Boat Dock Repair

ViequesLove purchased materials to rebuild the lower section of the Esperanza Sugarcane Pier allowing fishing boats to dock and recreational activities to resume. Emergency Supplies for Schools

ViequesLove provided cleaning supplies, paint, paper products, office supplies, first aid kits, generators and cisterns to the schools on Vieques in order for them to open more properly equipped and freshly cleaned.  Ongoing initiatives will help to set up internet libraries, supply ceiling fans, and install lights on the high-school basketball court.

Marine Vessel Safety

Lights were purchased and installed at key locations to ensure the safety of marine vessels traveling at night, such as the ferry dock, Cayo Blanco (close to the north coast), the Puerto Ferro Lighthouse, and the Rompeolas – also known as the long pier or Mosquito Pier.

Emergency Management Support

ViequesLove worked with OMME (Emergency Management Office) to supply necessary equipment that was not readily available such as fuel, batteries for vehicles, chainsaws, generators, and necessities for the temporary shelter allowing them to work more effectively. ViequesLove also provided a cellular phone and monthly service to facilitate communications between the Emergency Management Office and ambulance.

VHF Radio Network

In partnership with Que Fe Transforma, Alberic Medina, and the Vieques fishermen, a VHF Radio network was established. ViequesLove purchased 28 VHF Radios, two antennas, 2 power supplies, and two base stations so that an on-island system of communication is viable if cell service is down.
